A Font-Lover's Guide: The Typography of Vibratom Studios

Good typography, like a good film score, is often most effective when you don't even notice it. It seamlessly guides you through the content, making it easy and pleasurable to read. Bad typography, on the other hand, is like a constant, low-level irritant. It makes reading a chore and can undermine the credibility of the entire message.
At Vibratom Studios, we are unapologetically obsessed with typography. We believe that the fonts we choose are as much a part of the user experience as the colors, the layout, and the features. They are the voice of our interface.
Let's pull back the curtain on the two typefaces that form the foundation of the Vibratom brand and explore why they were chosen.
Our Body Font: Inter — The Champion of Readability
For all of our primary text—paragraphs, descriptions, and labels—we use a font called Inter.
- What it is: Inter is a modern "grotesque" sans-serif typeface designed by Rasmus Andersson. It was specifically created for high-readability on computer screens.
- Why we chose it:
- Clarity at All Sizes: Inter was designed with a tall x-height (the height of a lowercase 'x'), which makes it incredibly legible even at very small sizes. This is crucial for UI design, where text needs to be clear everywhere from a large heading to a tiny label.
- A Neutral, Yet Friendly Tone: Inter has a clean, neutral feel that doesn't draw too much attention to itself. This allows the user to focus on the content, not the font. However, it also has subtle design choices—like the slightly squared-off curves—that give it a touch of modern, friendly personality. It feels professional, but not cold.
- Extensive Weight and Feature Set: Inter comes in a wide range of weights, from thin to black, which gives us the flexibility to create a clear visual hierarchy. It also includes features like tabular numerals (where all numbers have the same width), which is perfect for tools like Axiom where numbers need to align perfectly in tables.
Our Headline Font: Space Grotesk — Personality and Punch
For our major headlines and marketing copy, we switch to Space Grotesk.
- What it is: Space Grotesk is a "neo-grotesque" sans-serif typeface designed by Florian Karsten. It's based on a classic design but modified to have a more modern, distinctive, and slightly quirky feel.
- Why we chose it:
- Distinctive Character: While Inter is designed to be a quiet workhorse, Space Grotesk is designed to have a voice. Its unique letterforms—like the "g" and the "k"—give it a memorable, tech-forward personality. It captures the innovative and creative spirit of the Vibratom brand.
- Excellent Display Properties: It's designed to look great at large sizes. It's what we use to make a statement, to grab your attention in a headline, or to showcase the name of one of our products.
- The Perfect Pairing: Space Grotesk and Inter are different enough to create a clear contrast between headlines and body text, but they share a similar geometric foundation. This means they feel like they belong to the same family, creating a cohesive and harmonious typographic system.
Typography is Design
The choice of a font is not a minor decorative decision. It's a fundamental aspect of user interface design. By choosing fonts that are both highly functional (Inter) and full of personality (Space Grotesk), we aim to create an experience that is not only usable but also beautiful and reflective of our brand's character. It's a small detail, but we believe it's the small details that add up to a great product.
